Collaboration among Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across Africa is essential for fostering innovation and driving economic growth. To support this, we have established a vibrant community of over 600 HEIs, where we regularly share opportunities, deliver capacity-building programs, and promote cross-institutional collaboration at national, regional, and continental levels.
We collaborate with HEIs to design and implement customised innovation programs that are aligned with institutional strengths, student needs, and local economic opportunities. These programs are often focused on youth-led entrepreneurship, STEM innovation, digital skills, and industry-relevant problem-solving. The goal is to move beyond theory and enable students and faculty to develop practical, scalable solutions.
This begins with a comprehensive assessment of the HEI’s current innovation ecosystem (mapping existing resources, partnerships, gaps, and opportunities). Then, our HEI Innovation Practice identifies what is needed to support a thriving entrepreneurship culture within the institution. This includes analyzing faculty capacity, student engagement, infrastructure, and regional industry alignment.
To ensure long-term impact, our HEI Innovation Practice works with the leadership of African HEIs to develop strategic roadmaps for innovation, research commercialisation, and entrepreneurship support. This includes defining institutional goals, setting measurable targets, and outlining pathways for the integration of innovation and entrepreneurship into academic, administrative, and policy structures within the institution.
We facilitate technology transfer mechanisms, helping HEIs convert research and student innovations into market-ready products or services through intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer capacity-building workshops.
Access to funding is a critical bottleneck for innovation. The HEI Innovation Practice by EyeCity Africa helps HEIs design funding structures and linkages to support their innovation programs. This includes identifying public and private funding sources, advising on and sharing grant opportunities, and developing investment readiness strategies for student-led ventures and institutional initiatives.
